Merrickville’s Magical Snowflake Festival

Family Day, February 17, 2025

Snow crunched underfoot, and the air smelled of woodsmoke. Children in colourful snowsuits darted past, tumbling down snowbanks with breathless laughter. The Snowflake Festival had returned to Merrickville, filling the village with winter’s simple joys.

A Village Transformed

For one magical day, Merrickville became a winter wonderland. Organized by the Merrickville-Wolford Chamber of Commerce, the annual festival welcomed residents and visitors with free activities, seasonal delights, and a deep sense of community.

Festival Highlights

The local fire department proudly displayed their gleaming fire trucks, drawing excited crowds of all ages. Families braved the crisp air, weaving through seasonal games and snow-covered play areas. Others took in the village’s charm from scenic wagon rides, the rhythmic clatter of hooves adding a timeless touch.

Nearby, children zipped down snow-packed hills, scarves snapping behind them as they whooped with delight. Against the blinding white snow, their bright jackets and beaming faces painted the perfect winter scene.

Shared Meals & Conversation

Fingers thawed around steaming bowls of soup, fresh hot dogs, rich hot chocolate, and hot coffee. Buckets of candy—courtesy of yours truly—were eagerly scooped up by excited kids. The great communal tables buzzed with conversation as neighbors reconnected, newcomers were welcomed, and children wove through the crowd in bursts of laughter.

Inside the community center, warmth spread beyond the fire’s glow. Parents balanced drinks and snacks while keeping an eye on bundled-up little ones. Old friends reminisced, leaning in to swap news and good-natured gossip. Others shared tips on braving the winter chill.

The festival wasn’t just about the festivities—it was about the people. It captured the spirit of Merrickville: a place where neighbors become friends and strangers are welcomed like family. Wrapped in scarves and laughter, warmth spread through the crowd—not just from the fires, but from the simple joy of being together.
